"This great national project will stand as a symbol for freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law," Harper said.
"We are building a monument to Canada's embrace of humanity's highest ideals
That's sooooo rich Mr. Harper. Soooooo very rich.

Remember, their version of "freedom", "democracy", and the "rule of law", is different from most of the world's (and definitely from a "liberal centrist's"):
Freedom: Freedom to support anyone politically, as long as they espouse the "free-market fascist" ideals
Democracy: As long as you buy our stuff, and vote for the "strongman" we support...
Rule of Law: You're either "wit us, or agin' us"
Their take on human rights is equally "lovable": You have the right to say or do A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G... which means you CAN attack someone publicly with defamatory and hateful speech, incite people to violence against that group, then claim the speaker had a RIGHT to do this. As a matter of fact, the conservative view of human rights involves the individual's right to attack over all else - even if it leads to genocide.
Scary thing is, when you get that far right, it's just as bad as the extreme left (speaking of dictators and genocides)...
