What now? If Harper sails through this election it will be up to the Liberals to do some serious soul-searching and redefine the party and its place in Canada's political spectrum. This vague floating around in the centre-right was a profoundly stupid gambit that has only worked to Harper's advantage. His prime objective, openly stated, has always been to shift Canada's political centre to the right but I don't think he ever, in his wildest dreams, imagined the Libs wouldn't push back.
Just because you're on the political right doesn't make you conservative. Just because you're to the left of what passes for conservative doesn't make you liberal.
I think we need a forceful restatement of the role of genuine liberalism in the Liberal Party. We can't hope for that if we're content to transform the LPC into the True North Democratic Party.
