Gaza by the Numbers

A Jewish friend of mine sent me this link from The Israel Project's Website. Of course, it's not to say a non-Jewish friend couldn't have sent the information to me. Cause they could have. Also, I have posted the link here just so EzRaw LeRant doesn't accuse me of getting this info from a neo-Nazi sight again.

The numbers I don't see here at present are the 680 dead Palestinians since December 27, 2008. The 3400 wounded Palestinians. The number of houses, schools, apartment buildings and public buildings destroyed is gaza since 12/08/08. The 800,000 civilians now living without water or power today in Gaza. The 450,000 that may not have food today in Gaza. The number of mothers unable to feed their children for the past 5 days in Gaza.

On Dec. 27, Israel began defensive operations to dismantle Iran-backed Hamas’s terrorist infrastructure in Gaza and stop the terrorist group from its 8-years-long campaign of attacking Israeli civilians with 10,000 rockets, missiles and mortars. [1]

Despite Hamas’s unrelenting rocket attacks, Israel continues to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, warning the civilian population to stay clear of terrorist sites. Said Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, "Israel has made it clear that we are fighting against terrorism, not the Gazan residents, and the extremists are the ones who are taking advantage of the concern of the humanitarian organizations and the international community as a means of pressuring Israel." [2]

Israel’s Humanitarian Aid to Gaza
508 truckloads of humanitarian aid that have been delivered through Israeli crossings into Gaza since the beginning of Operation Cast Lead, including basic food commodities, medication, medical supplies, blood units and donations by various governments and blood units. [3]

80 truckloads of humanitarian aid expected to arrive in Gaza on Jan. 5 [4]

20 Palestinians evacuated to Israel for medical treatment (including two children) [5]

800,000+ leaflets disseminated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to Gaza civilians instructing them to stay away from terrorist and weapons storage sites [6]

70+ times the IDF warned populated areas before conducting airstrikes [7]

10,000 tons of aid transported into Gaza at the request of international organizations, the Palestinian Authority and various governments since the beginning of Operation Cast Lead. The World Food Program informed Israel last week that that it would cease shipment of food to Gaza because warehouses are at full capacity, with enough food to last two weeks. [8]

0 wounded Palestinians allowed by Hamas to cross from Gaza into Egypt for treatment. [9]

Iran-backed Hamas Rocket, Mortar Attacks and Nuclear Developments

10,000+ rockets and mortars fired from Gaza since 2001. [10]

3,200+ rockets and mortars fired from Gaza in 2008 alone. [11]

6,500+ rockets and mortars fired from Gaza since Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. [12]

538+ rockets and mortars fired from Gaza into Israeli territory during the ceasefire from June 19 to Dec. 19, 2008. [13]

480 rockets and mortars fired from Gaza into Israel since Operation Cast Lead began Dec. 27. [14]

28 deaths caused by rockets and mortars fired from Gaza into Israel since 2001. The dead include Israelis, Palestinians and foreign workers. Since the ceasefire ended, Iran-backed Palestinian groups in Gaza fired rockets and mortars that killed an Israeli-Arab construction worker and a mother of four who was seeking shelter in a bus station as a rocket warning siren sounded. [15]

1,000+ people in Israel injured from rockets and mortars fired from Gaza since 2001, including Israelis, Palestinians and foreign workers. Since the start of Israel’s defensive operation in Gaza Dec. 27, 90 Israelis have been injured and at least 244 have been treated for shock. [16]

20,000 Hamas terrorists Israel is targeting as part of its defensive operations [17]

1,000,000 Israeli civilians Hamas is targeting and can reach. [18]

15 seconds Israelis have to get to a bomb shelter once a warning siren has sounded. [19]

8 years Israel has endured rockets and mortar fire from Gaza [20]

3 mosques in Gaza used as weapons, ammunitions and explosives depots that were struck by the Israel Defense Forces during the operation in Gaza. [21] The strikes occurred only at night and never during prayer times, to avoid civilian casualties.

4 UN Security Council resolutions passed since 2006 to try to stop Iran from enriching uranium. [22]

5,000+ number of centrifuges operating in Iran to enrich uranium, the material used to produce a nuclear weapon. [23]

1 zoo, the “Katifari,” that housed hundreds of animals and was moved. [42]

10,000 people who were employed in agriculture and related industries in Gush Katif, including 5,000 Palestinians. [43]

60% proportion of Israel's cherry tomato exports that came from the Gaza Strip. Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza extinguished this economic resource. [44]

3.5 million square meters (almost 1,000 acres) of greenhouses abandoned in Gaza. [45]

70 percentage of Israel's organic produce grown in Gaza – another economic resource lost in the evacuation. [46]

60 percentage of herbs exported from Israel that came from Gush Katif. [47]

15 percentage of Israel agricultural exports that originated in Gaza – exports lost following Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza. [48]

$360,000 expected average compensation amount Israel expected to pay to relocate each family. [49]

$870 million approximate cost for Israel to facilitate the resettlement of former West Bank and Gaza residents elsewhere in the country. [50]

$500 million amount of money Israel's security establishment spent to relocate Israel Defense Forces bases outside the Gaza Strip and build new border crossing facilities. [51]

After Israel’s evacuation from Gaza

430,000 West Bank Palestinians able to move freely within and between Palestinian-controlled areas. [52]

1 Israeli remaining in Gaza. Staff Sgt. Gilad Shalit was abducted from Israel on June 25, 2006 by Hamas in a bloody cross-border raid in which the terrorists also killed two IDF soldiers and wounded four others. [53]

1.2 million Arabs who remained full and legal citizens of Israel. All Israeli citizens – Christians, Muslims, and Jews – have freedom of speech, religion, press, and the right to vote. [54]

1.3 million Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip many of them in Palestinian Authority-controlled refugee camps, who live under their own leaders. [55]

820,000 Jewish refugees forced to flee without their belongings from Arab countries between 1947 and 1949, and who have never been compensated by Arab governments for their losses. [58]

650,000 Arab refugees who left Israel from 1947-1949 and still need Palestinian leaders who will end terrorism and the culture of hate. [57]

Israel’s withdrawal from four northern West Bank settlements created an area more than twice the size of Gaza’s 140 square miles under Palestinian control and devoid of any Israeli presence. [58]

While stressing that it seeks to provide "accurate" information, TIP is explicit about its sympathies. "As Israel faces threats from Iran and their proxies Hezbollah and Hamas, TIP is working to protect Israel and your global Jewish family," it states on its family.[2] It also states that "TIP regularly hosts press briefings featuring leading Israeli spokespeople and analysts that give journalists an opportunity to get information and answers to their questions face-to-face. By providing journalists with the facts, context and visuals they need, TIP causes hundreds of millions of people around the world to see a more positive public face of Israel. This helps protect Israel, reduce anti-Semitism and increase pride in Israel," it states on its website.[1]

So much for my comment about you trying to be objective....

James:

Suggest that you turn to Bob Rae in the hope of understanding the issues a little better. Your blogs have turned into diatribes unworthy of your usual writing.

I think Bob, whom I know you respect, can put into perspective some of the difficult images that you are witnessing.

War is not pretty and unfortunately many civilians have been victimized. Is democracy worth war? Are our values worth defending?

I am hoping that you will reach out to Bob Rae and Byron Wilfret to understand why the Liberal Party stands with Israel.

James Curran said...

Doctor, are you suggesting Bob Rae would convince me civilians dying is the right course of action? That 10 tons of food feeds 1.5 million people?

I don't think even Bob could make that math work.

Again! I Stand with Israel! I don't stand with them in this invasion. What part don't you get? Jeezuz.

Are you telling me all of the 7.8 million people living in Israel are for this mission and I'm the only pro-Israel Liberal that is against the mission?

I support Israel, in general at least. But blowing up civilians, and especially children, really can't be sold as self-defence, no matter how you sugar coat it. Yes, Hamas shares the blame, that's why they're considered a terrorist organization. Unless Israel wishes equal consideration, they have to stop stooping to the same lows as the terrorists.

I am telling you that there is consensus (from the far left to the right) in the Israeli Knesset on the Gaza Operation.

How could there not be after more than 3200 rockets have been fired from (unoccupied) Gaza in the past 12 months?

What country would allow that situation to continue.
The first and foremost obligation of a Government is to protect its citizens.

I mentioned the 10 tons of food because you have written that israel has not allowed aid in.

Israel's army acts in a similar manner that Canada's does. using the same values and morals in conducting warfare. It will never be pretty, in Gaza or Khandahar.

What is relevant is why this operation had to be undertaken.

I'm not sure why you fear speaking with Bob. Certainly some of your support for him was based on his Forein Policy prowess. Why not call upon it?

The "Doctor" like the pro-Israel Libs and the Cons always overlook the point that aerial bombardment of densely populated areas is terrorism. A 1,000 or 2,000 pound bomb is an AREA weapon. Some of these are utterly lethal beyond 100 yards of impact. The next order up the lethality ladder are the bunker busters, then the Fuel/air explosives and, finally, nukes.

There is no excuse for employing area weapons in populated areas, none whatsoever. It's just an unacceptable form of warfare and a form of terrorism.

The Doctor and Michael Ignatieff and Bob Rae should read about the blast effects of these weapons and maybe then they'd have a more nuanced understanding of the right of self defence.

The Doctor said...

I like Rae or Iggy's understanding of Mounds every day of the week.

James Curran said...

I think you miss the point. People are dying in the streets. Even Bob, I'm sure, is not happy about that.

I think you also know by now that I don't fear talking to anyone. Unfortunately, you and I aren't the ones negotiating any peace initiatives. Then again, either is our duly elected Canadian government.

The Doctor said...

I'm sure Bob is not happy about any deaths, nor am I.

However, unlike you, I doubt if Bob is confusing the firefighter with the arsonist.

James Curran said...

I see. So it was Hamas that shelled the building?

The Doctor said...

It was Hamas that caused the building to be shelled, knowing that children were inside.

James Curran said...

I see. Well then. Bombs away. Kill all those UN workers too while your at it. What's that? Oh. Three were killed? Blame it on Hamas. The UN will understand.

I posted this comment at LeDaro's for Ted. I think it is warranted here, too, for The Doctor.

See here and also here: [Start where it says: "There is also some appalling misinformation being spread – one frequently hears the claim that Israel left Gaza in 2005 in order to build peace but all it received was terror."]

Sitsonsix said...
Will Mr. Levant call these women anti-semites too?

Uh.. well, I don't think I'd call Judy Rebick an anti-Semite, probably a deluded wack-job would suffice..

I stand with James to this extent -taking a very adverse position regarding the "STATE" of Israel does not make you an anti-Semite. Period.

I may have less sympathy for Hamas than Israel - but even I, as a Conservative, wouldn't refer to James Curran, or anyone in general opposing Israel's actions as anti-Semetic.

Certainly, there are anti-Semites who will rant about Zionist conspiracies and such, and in the bargain, will complain about Israel's attacks on Gaza - but putting them in the same category as someone who has, for their own reasons, found fault with Israel in the killing of civilians is just using loaded invective without basis.

Personally - I think the deaths of Palestinian civilians is a massive tragedy, and I think the U.N. in particular, owes it to the world to finally step up and do something significant to bring all parties to a lasting cease-fire.. but, at the same time, this is a war. People die. I am not about to suggest that Truman, Churchill and McKenzie King should have been considered war criminals for civilian deaths in Dresden and Hiroshima. If a country enters a war with another neighboring country, civilians will be killed, and if one of the combatants specifically uses the death of civilians as a public relations tactic, it's going to be worse - and that's what we have.

Hamas is summarily executing its own citizens, is making no effort whatsoever to secure their safety -and to the contary, is putting children in harms way by intentionally taking military positions in sensitive areas, including schools and hospitals to take advantage of what terrorists themselves refer to as the "CNN Effect".

There's a lot of video of the casualties of this war - how about this video showing Palestinian terrorists using children as "shields"? This is the truth of Hamas.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OefgMtXOc1M

If there is fault with Israel, from my perspective, it is continuing occupation of areas of Gaza contrary to the "roadmap for peace" commitments, and to that extent is also complicious in this tragedy, and should not escape censure and pressure to enter into a cease-fire - but be certain, as most of our politicians have agreed, including Harper, Ignatieff and Layton, the fault is very much shared.

The Doctor said...

As Dershowitz has put it:
"The strategy is as simple as it is cynical: provoke Israel by playing
Russian roulette with its
children, firing rockets at kindergartens, playgrounds and hospitals;
hide behind its own civilians when firing at Israeli civilians; refuse
to build bunkers for its own civilians; have the TV cameras ready to
transmit every image of dead Palestinians, especially children;....."

James Curran said...

Well that explains everything Doc. Including the starvation of 1.5 million civilians and cutting the power to 800000 of them.

Remember those Belgian UN soldiers killed in Rwanda?

The Doctor said...

Question James:

Is Israel obliged to supply Gaza with 70% of its hydro-electricity?

Is it entitled to be paid for the electricity?

Does it have to continue supplying the electricity while hamas launches Kassam rockets at Ashkelon (where the hydro facility is located)?

James Curran said...

Was that part of the agreement in the first place?

There's some guys I don't like in New York so should Niagara Falls stop providing them with hydro?

Skinny Dipper said...

"800 cows, which comprised the second largest dairy farm in Israel, moved out of Gaza’s Gush Katif community. [40]"

The cows had to moove to make room for the Palestinians.

The Doctor said...

Should the pay for the electricity.

If they fire at your facility in Niagara from NY, do you still supply them with the Hydro?

This is real politik, it is what is happening.
