Flaherty to slash public funding for federal parties

There is no end to what the Conservatives will do to eliminate the Liberal Party of Canada from the face of the earth.

And you know what? We Liberals help them at every opportunity to do so. Case in point? Another leadership race.

One would think Flaherty's measure would just ensure that the Liberal Party adapts to a new way of fund-raising, and a new way of doing things...

One would hope. I think this might be tougher on the Greens...

Hmmm... I'm reading a lot of James Curran today...

So... another election then (Unless Jean is willing to pull a Lord Byng)?

Does the Conservative party do ANYTHING that isn't about increasing their odds of winning a majority?

It's not just the Liberals: look at the Bloc. How can they possibly be expected to continue running a party and occasionnal campaigns on 500,000$ a year?
The NDP would probably have to forego its ambitions of gaining official opposition status, but has experience as a smaller third party, so they'd probably be able to adapt. The damage to the Liberals and Bloc, though, is inexcusable and I am absolutely praying that something is done about this.

This would cripple all three opposition parties.

The most astute response, besides ramping up the fundraising bridgework necessary to adapt to this kid of reality, would be to work with the other opposition parties to form a workable coalition that would then be presented to the GG.
If Harper doesn't like the democracy he's been given, let's see him deal with this type. Because his evil, strategic steps are not intended to 'help average Canadians thru a crisis' but to kneecap our democratic political process.

Canadian taxpayers should not be supporting political parties, especially separatists.
Convention costs should not be part of the $1100 limit either, but EC ruled against that, change that rule.
Donation limits should be increased to $2000.

The opps would vote down saving taxpayers $30,000,000 ?

The GG would hand power over to a coalition where the largest party's leader just quit, and next in linefor command would be a separtist? PM Duceppe?
When 57% of the seats outside of separatist rule went to the Conservatives?

A Path to political and economic corruption

Removing campaign funding combined with Harpers abuse of election spending rules will destroy the ability of political parties to compete fairly. And destroy our democracy and replace it with a system buying votes. Sensible political interests which attract the majority of common people will not win, but rather political interest which make the rich richer will win. If anything the current system does not reward sensible political interests which attract the majority of common people enough.

This is a path to economic and political corruption and national destruction.

HOW MUCH has the private sale of the 407 cost the public through increased travel cost either directly or over crowding the 401?

The 407 was sold and is the gift that keeps giving. This corporate gift generates the kind of money can buy a lot more advertising then families trying to make ends meet. But it cost us all and makes us less economically efficient.

So much for the Cons trying to get along in the new parliament...how long did that last...5 minutes? Do you think it was a record?

Could it be possible that the Cons want their govt. brought down? For now?

Maybe they don't want to deal, or know how to deal, with this recession as it WILL hurt them in the eyes of the electorate as it has always done in the past to any govt. in rough economic times.

Perhaps they want a "coalition" of the opposition for a period of time so that the opposition will take the brunt of all the negativity & then when there is a next election the Cons will come in with a majority. Plus they will not have to bear any responsibility for any future actions in trying to mend the economic crisis.

Just a thought.

It's disgusting what they have proposed & is a way of annhilating all opposition if it were to happen.

Sleaze bags, as usual, no matter which way you look at it.

So...

- economic stimulus to businesses and Canadian workers can wait

- balanced budgets (and avoiding the payment of interest to foreign investors) can wait

- cutting spending for luxury flights to cabinet members can wait

... but the one thing the Conservatives can do is practice petty partisanship to change the rules of democracy, once again, in their favour.

If this was part of a larger economic plan, maybe you could convince Canadians that this is about the economy. As the ONLY thing they have announced, it clearly isn't.

Let's get rid of tax refunds for people who donate to political parties. If someone donates $100 to the Conservative Party and gets back $75 as a tax refund, then why should other taxpayers be on the hook for that $75? Stop bourgeoisie socialism.
